VALENCIA CF WILL HAVE TO FIGHT THE REVALIDATE THEIR UEFA CUP (0-2)

Valencia CF will have to fight to revalidate their last triumph in the UEFA Cup after losing against Werder Bremen in a home match at Mestalla who took full advantage of their counterattacks to validate their classification to the next round of the Champions’ League. The match in which a Valencia with the full support of their fans took the lead was marred by the insulting gestures to the home crowd by the Werder Bremen player Borowski. What is more the Dutch referee Ander Frisk did not have a fortunate performance with his decisions, particularly the off-side calls where there real opportunities to turn the match around and classification to the next round.

Driven on by the atmosphere of a Mestalla dressed for such an auspicious occasion, despite the cold, Valencia took the initiative of the match. The 10th minute saw the first piece of play that created some danger with a free kick that bounced off the barrier. Aimar was the best weapon for Valencia who in reality erred in precipitating their passes due to their desire to score that desperately sought for goal. The German team with a well prepared defensive line relied on counterattacks connecting up with Klose and Charisteas. In fact the former nearly put the first goal on the scoreboard in the 25th minute in a crossing shot that was saved by a masterful Cañizares.

Eleven minutes later Mestalla was brought to their feet once more by a piece of play by Aimar who gave an assist to Mista and whose shot was desperately saved by a defender. In the 39th minute they had the best scoring opportunity of the first half which a shot from in front of the area which was safely held by Reinke. The second act was accompanied with similar sensations of a Valencia desperately moving in on the German area. The Germans infuriated the home crowed with their continuous time wasting. Ranieri tried to make the difference with a triple substitution. Vicente, reappeared on the field of play after being injured at Bremen, Di Vaio and Corradi came out in search of the decisive goal. The ex-Juve player nearly managed it with a fantastic right-footer which struck Reinke’s crossbar. At this stage of the match our team could have really tipped the balance with the spaces they created but unfortunate nonexistent off-side calls nullified clear scoring opportunities, particularly in one piece of play which saw Di Vaio alone against Reinke.

Mestalla really put the pressure on and the uproar that the Bavarian end nearly helped to put a first goal on the scoreboard for Valencia. A heart-stopping close to the match was assumed in which Valencia was to lay siege on the Werder Bremen goal but in the 81st minute hopes were doused with a jug of cold water putting an end to the match. An unfortunate rebound fell at Nelson Valdez’s feet and he went one on one with Cañizares beating him after a dribble. This put paid to hopes of getting through the next round and all that was left was the shattered nerve and provocations by the Germans. Angulo was sent off and there was a bitter affray on the base line. This happened just before the second goal and after scoring there was a very unfortunate gesture by Borowski spoiling the German victory.
